Counterfeit cash spotted in Ionia; Search is on for suspects

IONIA CO. (WLNS) – A shopping trip was interrupted by a sharp-eyed cashier at the Ionia Wal Mart earlier this week. Now the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help identifying two people suspected of trying to pass counterfeit money.

It happened Monday night just before 10:30 p.m. when a black male and female selected several gift cards and began to check out.

The male then began paying for the gift cards with $100 bills. The cashier noticed that the money did not have the correct markings after receiving $1600 worth of $100 bills.

Both subjects ran from the store and entered a white SUV, possibly a Dodge Journey and fled.

If you have any information about these two suspects or the incident, please contact the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office at 616-527-5737 or call Silent Observer at 616-527-0107.
