DETROIT (AP) – Prosecutors are reviewing an updated warrant request for a state senator from Detroit who was arrested after shots were fired at his ex-wife’s car following a domestic dispute.
The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says it received the returned paperwork Tuesday from the Detroit Police Department. The initial warrant request was sent back to police for further investigation.
Virgil Smith was arrested after being interviewed by police about the early Sunday incident at his home. A gun also was seized from the home.
The Associated Press left messages Tuesday seeking comment from Smith’s Lansing office and from his attorney.
Smith is a Democrat. He’s been in the Legislature since 2003, first serving in the House. He is the son of Virgil Smith Jr., a Wayne County judge and former state lawmaker.
