(WLNS) – According to a new FBI report the number of police officers killed in the line of duty is on the rise.

However numbers are still below average. The agency says 51 officers were killed in 2014 up from just 27 the year before.

According to the FBI, an average of 64 officers died while on duty each year from 1980 through 2014. The latest numbers come at a time when police actions have drawn national attention including the death of two officers in Mississippi on Saturday.
