Inspector general a hot topic at city council meeting

LANSING, MI (WLNS) – Is an inspector general needed at the Lansing Board of Water and Light? Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero thinks so but not everyone’s convinced.

That position is one of the big topics planned for tonight’s city council meeting. Mayor Bernero put money aside for the position but because adding that job deals with the city’s charter, it needs to be approved by voters.

Today is the deadline for proposals to get onto the August ballot.

Mayor Bernero has included the inspector general position in his upcoming 2016 fiscal year budget which is also up for discussion tonight. He has also set aside funds for new equipment for Lansing police including body cameras.

The budget is actually smaller than our current one and officials expect to have about a half-million dollars leftover in the general fund for the start of the new fiscal year.
