LANSING, MI (WLNS) – It’s something everyone has to do.
“Get my taxes done like everybody else, last minute,” said Lisa Chesney, Lansing.
With the deadline to file those taxes close to 24 hours away, places like H&R Block have been busy.
“We take walk-ins and appointments. Our appointments are filling up, but we can fit everybody in,” said Debbie Fox, tax professional.
The deadline to file is midnight Wednesday and if your tax forms don’t make it to the finish line, that means running into penalties.
“You start getting penalties if you owe. If you don’t owe you usually don’t have a penalty.”
Reporter: “If you file for an extension do you still have to pay money?”
Debbie Fox: ‘If you owe.”
Taxpayers can always ask for extra time to file their paperwork, but any money owed for taxes is still due Wednesday.
“Everybody has a misconception that they don’t have to pay their taxes. If they have their taxes done and they owe $5,000, they have to pay that $5,000 by the 15th.”
But for some finishing up their taxes the day before, they feel the heat.
“Don’t wait ‘til the last minute next time,” said Lisa Chesney.
It’s better to be safe than sorry.
