State Board Names 3 Finalists For Michigan Schools Chief

LANSING, MI (AP) – The State Board of Education in Michigan has named three finalists in its search for a replacement for State Superintendent Mike Flanagan.

The board said that its finalists are Oakland Schools Superintendent Vickie Markavitch, Washtenaw Intermediate School District Superintendent Scott Menzel and Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent Brian Whiston.

The three finalists will go through final interviews March 18, and the board said it could announce its state superintendent pick following deliberations. The interviews will be open to the public.

Six semifinals were interviewed in public by the board across two days. They were chosen from more than 50 people that applied from Michigan and elsewhere in the U.S.

Flanagan is retiring at the end of June.
