UPDATE: Head-On Collision Shuts Down Grand River Road Near Bancroft

UPDATE 11:55 a.m. – Investigators tell 6 News that the suspect in the chase had been the subject of a search after authorities were told at around 4:30 a.m. to be on the lookout for the man’s white pickup truck.

UPDATE 9:35 a.m. – According to investigators there are two people involved in the crash, one in each vehicle. Both are hospitalized and their conditions are unknown at this time. An eyewitness tells 6 News that the incident began in a gas station when a vehicle was carjacked and a short hostage situation occurred. The suspect took off in the stolen vehicle leading to the police pursuit. The accident took place about three miles from the gas station.

UPDATE 8:40 a.m. – Michigan State Police investigators tell 6 News that the accident may have been triggered by a fight at a nearby gas station. According to investigators a police car was chasing one of the vehicles when the suspect car swerved into the path of an oncoming car. 6 News reporter Mariah Harrison is on the scene and will have updates online and on 6 News at Noon.

DEVELOPING 7:30 a.m. – Emergency crews and Michigan State Police are on the scene of a head-on car accident on Grand River Road near Bancroft in Shiawassee County. At least two ambulances are at the accident site. The accident was first reported just before 6:30 a.m.

It is unclear if there are injuries but rescuers reportedly used the Jaws of Life to remove at least one victim. Grand River Road south of Britton Road is currently blocked off at the site.
