WASHINGTON (WLNS) – In 2014, merchandise exports from Michigan hit $55.8 billion.
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, these exports helped the U.S. reach a record $2.35 trillion in goods and services exports.
Transportation equipment exported the highest amount ($25.9 billion) in 2014, which the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration says contributes to jobs in the industry.
“Exports are critical to economic growth and job creation in communities across the country,” said Penny Pritzker, Secretary of Commerce. “With 95 percent of the world’s consumers living outside the United States, opening more markets to ‘Made in America’ goods and services is fundamental to our nation’s competitiveness, job creation, and the economic security of our families.
In order to keep growing Michigan’s economy, Congress needs to pass bipartisan trade promotion legislation. This legislation would open the door for negotiating new trade agreements which would help open new markets to American-made goods and services.
