A Detroit-area woman accused of leaving her newborn baby to die in a garage has been ordered to trial on a murder charge.
At a court hearing Friday, Eastpointe Judge Carl Gerds III says Angela Alexie created a “high probability of death” after giving birth in a garage and leaving the boy there in December.
The body was discovered in January at a recycling center nearby in Roseville. The judge says there’s enough evidence to send the case to trial in Macomb County.
Alexie is charged with child abuse and murder committed during a felony. It’s the equivalent of first-degree murder and carries a sentence of life in prison without parole.
Defense lawyer attorney Steve Kaplan says the murder charge is excessive and has said Alexie is “very remorseful” about the boy’s death and she would release the rights to bury the baby.
Prosecutor Bill Cataldo says “stupidity is not a defense.”
