EAST LANSING, MI (WLNS) – Michigan State University Police want to warn you of a scam that could come to either a student’s phone or a parent of an MSU student’s phone.
The scam involves a caller who claims they are from a law enforcement agency. They say the MSU student has a warrant and if you do not make a payment over the phone, the caller threatens that you will be arrested.
The scammers involved are using a program that makes caller ID appear to show a real agency number. Scammers will also give a phone number of an agency for people to call and confirm the warrant. However, the agency will not be able to confirm that information.
MSU police say the scammers may be getting phone numbers from those listed in the MSU People Search.
For students who have a home phone number listed in the MSU People Search, police suggest you notify your parents so they do not become a victim of this scam.
