Protecting Your Home From The Flames

DELTA TOWNSHIP, MI (WLNS)  – As the use of chimneys and space heaters continue through the winter, knowing the steps to take and how to properly use a fire extinguisher is important.

Fire Inspector Michael Roberts with the Delta Township Fire Department says, “to call 9-1-1 as soon as possible and then grab your fire extinguisher and then follow the four simple steps.”

Those steps include:

1. Pulling the pin
2. Aiming the hose
3. Squeezing the handle
4. Sweeping the hose pointed at the base of the fire

Roberts also says when using a fire extinguisher start by aiming at the base of the fire and work your way up until the flames are smothered.

There are different types of fire extinguishers rated A, B,C,D or K.

Their purpose includes:
A- common fires
B- flammable liquid fires
C- electrical fires
D- metal fires
K- commercial and kitchen fires

However, there are steps you can take now to minimize the chances of a house fire.

“Make sure you have three feet away from your space heats and any combustible materials,” says Roberts. “Make sure your fireplaces, chimney’s and especially your wood burning fireplaces are cleaned and checked.”
