(WLNS) – Police in Ohio have arrested a woman from Lansing after she called 9-1-1 in tears saying that she had just tried to suffocate her 7-month-old daughter.
According to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, the call came in to dispatchers just after 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
They say 33-year-old Ruth Grace Smith of Lansing dialed 9-1-1 from the parking lot outside the Kalahari Waterpark Resort and said she tried to suffocate her daughter by smothering her with a pillow.
6 News has obtained a recording of that 9-1-1 call…
DISPATCH: “is your daughter ok? Does she need an ambulance?”
SMITH: “I don’t know I tried to suffocate her for 5 minutes, she wasn’t dying so i took the pillow off.. I don’t know if she’s OK or not but she seems fine,” she said.
Emergency responders took the 7-month-old baby to a near-by hospital where she’s reportedly doing just fine.
The woman told deputies she drove to the resort for the sole purpose of killing her baby.
6 News was in the woman’s Lansing neighborhood today as news of the incident spread.
We spoke with members of Smith’s family at the address listed as her home in the Sandusky police report, but they told me they have no comment at this time.
Some of her neighbors however, say they are in shock.
“I’m completely shocked to hear that somebody that lives around here that.. that’s my neighbor.. that that would happen.. it’s completely unexpected.. this is a nice neighborhood,” Nicole Waugh, a neighbor said.
Smith reportedly told sheriff’s deputies she’s going through a custody dispute with the baby’s father and said she would rather kill the baby than lose custody.
Officials have gotten notified the baby’s father of the incident but haven’t released his identity.
We have learned the baby is no longer in the hospital tonight but at this point there is no word on who is caring for her.
Smith is currently sitting behind bars and is being held without bond on attempted murder charges.
