(CBS) – Dramatic footage shot by an employee of the Taiwanese television station TVBS showed the moment on Wednesday a passenger plane turned on its side in midair, clipped an elevated roadway and then careered into a river shortly after takeoff from the island’s capital of Taipei.
At least 15 of the 58 people on board were killed in the accident and the death toll in the TransAsia Airways place crash is expected to rise.
Thirty-one passengers were from China, Taiwan’s tourism bureau said.
Wednesday’s flight had taken off from Taipei’s downtown Sungshan Airport en route to the outlying Taiwan-controlled Kinmen islands.
Civil aviation officials said the flight took off at 10:53 am local time (0253 GMT) and lost contact with controllers two minutes later.
Kinmen’s airport is a common link between Taipei and China’s Fujian province.
Rescue crews were clearing the mostly sunken fuselage in the Keelung River a couple dozen metres from the shore.
It was the airline’s second French-Italian-built ATR 72 to crash in the past year.
