Bakers Create Big Pie To Celebrate Michigan’s 178th Birthday

BRIGHTON, Mich. (AP) – A Michigan bakery has created a big pie to help celebrate the state’s 178th birthday.

According to reports free samples of the 25-pound fruit pie will be given out Monday at Grand Traverse Pie Co. in Brighton.

Store owner Gail Demski says the pie includes 15 pounds of Michigan apples, cherries and blueberries. With crumbs and the pie tin, the 20-inch pie weighs about 25 pounds. The pie is topped with cutouts showing Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas.

Bakery manager Kelly Gaither and baker Stephanie Krogstad created the pie together. Gaither says: “It’s just fun to do cool things.”

Michigan became the nation’s 26th state on Jan. 26, 1837.
