EAST LANSING, MI (WLNS) – The East Lansing Police Department wants to warn you about a phone scam that could scam you or someone you know out of money.
The phone call comes from a non-emergency phone number, 517-351-4220. This phone number is an East Lansing Police Department phone number, which officials say has been compromised.
The person calling claims they’re looking for money on a past due account and then demands you make a payment. If you refuse, officials say the person has made threats that they will seek an arrest if a payment is not made.
East Lansing Police say they’re actively working to fix the problem. If you receive a call that appears to be a phone scam, hang up and call 517-351-4220, ext. 6897 to report it to police.
Officials would like to remind you that the East Lansing Police Department does not attempt to collect fines over the phone. “Residents are reminded to never provide personal information over the phone, including bank account information, social security numbers, their date of birth, etc,” said Lt. Steve Gonzales, East Lansing Police Department.
