(WLNS) – It is the start of a new year but the flu season is in full swing.
Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say it has reached epidemic levels and it is not even at peak season yet. Michigan is bordered by some of the hardest hit states. As of December 29th the Michigan Department of Community Health reports more than 300 people have gone to emergency rooms and doctor’s offices with influenza-like illnesses. But that number is likely a lot higher because not every hospital reports those cases and not everyone with the flu goes to see a doctor.
Of course there are ways to fight the flu. The CDC says the best way is to wash your hands with soap and warm water. If you have a cough you should try to cough into the crook of your arm and of course you can always get a flu shot to lower your risk.
