(WLNS) – Several states across the country are experiencing higher than normal cases of the flu.
The latest numbers show 22 states are seeing some of the highest numbers. Michigan is considered moderate at this time.
Sparrow Hospital says they’re experiencing higher than normal flu cases or people heading to the emergency room for this time of year.
Usually the flu season tends to peak between the end of January and February. So physicians want to remind you get your vaccine, in particular to help prevent spreading cases.
Sparrow is limiting the amount of visitors for most fragile and at risk patients, especially the labor and delivery unit. Visitors are being limited to three.
Those patients who are experiencing any symptoms, per protocol are being separated into another room.
“There’s no specific level of fever, but if you have symptoms, such as complex fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat or a combination of these, suggesting influenza type illness, we cohort them or put them in a separate room,” said Apoorv Kalra, MD, infectious diseases, Sparrow.
There are ways to fight the flu. The CDC says the best way is to wash your hands with soap and warm water.
If you have a cough you should try to cough into the crook of your arm. Of course you can always get a flu shot to lower your risk.
