Police Remind Drivers Not To Drink And Drive

(WLNS) – If you have New Year’s Eve plans Wednesday night, there are a few things you should know.

One of the biggest things to know is that police will have a noticeable presence out on the roads. They’re looking for anyone who decides to drink and drive.

6 News Genna Hilgenbrink tells us how you can ring in the New Year and stay safe.

You don’t plan on drunk driving yet it happens anyway. Drunk driving threatens the lives of innocent people everywhere and New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest nights for police officers patrolling the roads.

“So what happens is somebody gets to a party or to a bar and they had too much to drink and they don’t have any plan on how to get home. So normally it is not a crime that anybody intended to commit, but they didn’t plan ahead for the evening,” said Sgt. Michael Church, Michigan State Police.

It’s easy enough to have a plan for the evening, but if you catch yourself in a pinch you can always call a cab.

“Well our company basically focuses on taking people safely home and so tonight is a big night for us, there’s lots of people out drinking and they need not to be driving, so we hope that they will call us!” said Roger Wilson, Shaggin’ Wagon.

It’s also worth considering asking friends or family for a ride. It is much better than the alternative.

“The prudence of taking a cab and the inconvenience is minor, as opposed to being charged with a criminal offense. And being arrested and the embarrassment associated being charged with an OWI,” said Andrew Abood, attorney at Abood Law.

The Michigan State Police Department wants to remind drivers that if you drink and drive they will be looking for you and you will get arrested.

“We anticipate a lot of intoxicated drivers this evening and if we find you intoxicated we will arrest you and take you to jail.”

A simple plan can keep you safe and ensure a happy and fun new year.
