DETROIT (AP) – Clergy and law enforcement leaders in Detroit and Wayne County are expected to discuss an annual effort to end gunfire during New Year’s celebrations.
The Rev. Nicholas Hood III will be joined Monday by Detroit Police Chief James Craig, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon and others to urge residents to ring bells at midnight Thursday instead of shooting guns into the air.
This is the 17th year for “Ring in the New Year with a Bell, Not a Bang.”
Shooting guns skyward has been an unwritten tradition for decades in Detroit and some other cities. Detroit’s bell-ringing effort was started by Hood after Sandra Latham was killed in 1997 by a stray bullet while sitting in her dining room.
Latham’s relatives are expected to attend Monday’s program.
