(WLNS) – Police officers and firefighters took on a different job Thursday, Santa Claus.
Many seniors in mid-Michigan do not have family to celebrate the holidays with. Our Mariah Harrison has more on how they helped make it a very Merry Christmas for hundreds of them.
Area police officers and firefighters rolled out in a hurry Thursday morning, but for a different reason than you may expect.
“Today is our annual No Senior Without Christmas. We’re very excited that we can help many indigent elders in the community,” said Traci Ruiz, Ingham County Triad Co-Chair.
The Ingham County Triad organized this whole operation. The Triad is made up of law enforcement agencies in Clinton, Eaton and Ingham Counties. They work to help out senior citizens 60 year and older any way they can, including delivering Christmas care packages.Volunteers will fill 300 baskets Thursday with everything from snacks to toiletries, socks, blankets, anything a senior may need to make it through the holidays.
Marian, 88 qualifies to receive a basket, but chose to come out and help any way she could.
Reporter: “Why do you volunteer?”
Marian: “It just keeps me going.”
This organized chaos took weeks of planning and hours of set up, but volunteers big and small say the reward is worth it every year.
