LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Usually when we see snow, we think of making snowmen and snow angels, or maybe just staying off the roads.
One local park wants mid-Michiganders to put their winter-snow skills to the test with snow tubing and snowboarding.
6 News Reporter Francesca Amiker checked out the slopes at Hawk Island Snow Park Tuesday morning and even got to go for a ride on a tube.
Usually when it's cold outside we don't think about winter sports, but the snow park wants to change that by offering unique, active outdoor fun. The park offers a snow tubing hill and a snowboarding hill. The tubes are included in the rental price, but the park asks that you bring your own snowboard.
Before the park opens for the season they have to sculpt the snow into snow chutes, used for tubing. Included in the tubing rental price is a ride up to the snow chute so participants do not have to drag their own tubes up the hill.
Hawk Island Snow Park features an Urban Terrain Park for snowboarders, also with a convenient lift so there's no need to walk to the top of the hill. The park includes rails and other obstacles designed for the best snowboarding experience.
For those who don't want to spend the day in the snow, a one-and-a-half mile path is paved around the lake. The River Trail South between Hawk Island Park and Potter Park is also available for walking or jogging.
The park is open to anyone, whether or not you have experience snow tubing or snowboarding. A warming building and a snack bar are also available for guests.
