A five month search for a Jackson County felon has ended.
In May, 53-year-old Ricky Wheeldon was accused of profiting from the acquisition of large amounts of stolen property, which police say he paid for with drugs and money. He was charged with Conducting a Criminal Enterprise.
Wheeldon was on a $500,000 bond. He had been hiding from police since he took-off during his last day of trial five months ago, but changed his appearance in that time.
“He did change his appearance somewhat. He would have been a little bit more difficult to spot, given the way he looks currently so I'm sure that helped to allude him from police for a period of time,” said Jackson County Sheriff Steven Rand.
State police say they got a tip Wheeldon was at a home on Churchill Road in Leslie Township. MSP troopers from Jackson pulled over a vehicle just after midnight Wednesday with Wheeldon inside. The vehicle was traveling on Churchill Road in Leslie Township. Officers say they found a loaded gun and drugs on him. He was taken in to custody without any problems.
The driver of the vehicle, a 62-year-old man, is also facing charges for possession of meth and harboring a fugitive.
Reality TV star, “Dog the Bounty Hunter” also participated in the manhunt for Wheeldon. A Jackson county judge gave him permission to work as an officer for Lodise Bail Bonds. He did not take part in the arrest. He tells 6 News the catch was a team effort.
“I'm just very happy that someone in law enforcement got him. I think the whole team was instrumental in his apprehension,” said Dog.
Wheeldon is being held in the Jackson County Jail and will be facing a series of new charges. The driver faces charges of possesion of meth and harboring a fugitive.
