Hospital Metal Detector Nabs Hundreds of Weapons

The metal detector has only been in place for 2 and a half weeks but the staff in Sparrow's Emergency Department says – it's working wonders.

Dr. Timothy Hodge, Emergency Room Doctor: “Its been going fabulous. We have caught many things and primarily we have caught knives and sharp objects.”

In fact he says since the metal detector was installed, security has confiscated hundreds of weapons.

Hodge: “I am a little surprised by the large number of things that are found.”

And as visitors keep coming through so do the banned items but Dr. Hodge says visitors will get them back.

Hodge: “We return all legal objects back to the person, we see them as their personal possessions and they do receive them back.”

Because he says the goal is to minimize risk inside the hospital.

Hodge: “People come to see us and sometimes they are not in their normal state of mind, they might be intoxicated, they are severely ill often and they might act irrational.”

Hodge says tat's why it's important to catch potentially dangerous items, before they make it inside the hospital.
