Howell's only major hospital may soon be on the move. But don't worry, they don't plan to move very far, but the switch could mean big things for Livingston county residents.
Kris Sunberg knows his way from downtown Howell to St. Joseph Mercy Livingston hospital.
Kris Sunberg, Howell resident: “I've had two children born there and I like the hospital where it is for one reason, it's easy to get to.”
But the hospital may soon be moving. St. Joseph's Vice President, Greg Edema says the entire building needs an upgrade.
Greg Edema, St. Joseph's Vice President: “There are currently needs that aren't being met that a new facility would allow us to meet.”
One that can't be done at the current location.
Greg Edema, St. Joseph's Vice President: “For us to rebuild on this site, it would greatly take away our ability to function.”
The preliminary plan calls for moving to Marion Oaks, an old abandoned golf course just outside of Howell in Marion Township. It would mean more services and may even be more convenient for some in the community. The old golf course is right on D19, just minutes away from downtown.
Chris Conley, Waterford resident: “It's nice to know it's there because there's a lot of stuff that goes on, especially in downtown because of traffic. I'd rather them have more services because I know they're lacking in that.”
And a bigger location, could make a big difference. Right now St. Joe's and golf course developers are going through a 90 day evaluation period. A more concrete plan may emerge if both sides can work out a deal.
